Introduction
The growth in the data center industry both in cloud computing and artificial intelligence has increased importance to the global digital economy. The need for industry standards, technical leadership, and professional collaboration has never been greater. Recognizing this opportunity, the IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS) Industrial & Commercial Power Systems (I&CPS) Department created a data center subcommittee in 2019 and launched a three-year development project in 2023. The project was aimed at expanding and strengthening its Data Center Subcommittee after the challenges in 2020-2022. The initiative was designed to position I&CPS as a leading technical resource for emerging data center power system challenges while increasing member engagement and industry visibility.
Building a Stronger Data Center Community
The project was structured around three phases, the third and final phase is currently underway. From the outset, the objective was clear: accelerate the growth and influence of the Data Center Subcommittee through focused activities in standards development, technical paper contributions, industry outreach, and communications.
A key area of emphasis was increasing participation in IEEE standards activities. The project fostered collaboration among industry experts to identify emerging technical gaps and develop guidance for rapidly evolving data center technologies. At the same time, efforts were made to encourage the submission of technical papers to both the IEEE IAS Annual Meeting and the IEEE I&CPS Technical Conference. These contributions have expanded the body of available technical knowledge and increased visibility for the subcommittee within the broader IEEE community.
Advancing Standards and Technical Leadership
Standards development became one of the most successful outcomes of the initiative. The Data Center Subcommittee, in partnership with the Standards Development Committee, expanded its focus into several high-growth areas, which include modular data centers, direct current (DC) architectures, DC short-circuit studies, and DC arc-flash analysis. These topics reflect the industry’s movement toward more efficient, scalable, and resilient power system designs to support increasing computational demands.
By bringing together manufacturers, consultants, end users, and researchers, the subcommittee created a collaborative environment where practical industry experience could be translated into standards and technical guidance. These efforts are helping to shape the future of data center power system design and operation.
Expanding Thought Leadership
Another important component of the project was the development of external thought leadership. Members of the Data Center Subcommittee contributed articles to both digital and print publications serving the data center industry. These publications provided opportunities to highlight IEEE expertise while sharing best practices and emerging trends with a broader audience.
In addition, subcommittee representatives presented at major data center conferences and industry events. These presentations helped increase awareness of IEEE IAS activities and demonstrated the organization’s commitment to addressing real world technical challenges facing the data center sector.
Finally, social media engagement played a growing role in the initiative. Through targeted communications and promotion of technical accomplishments, the subcommittee expanded its reach and attracted new participants from across the industry.
A Successful Transformation
The success of the three-year project can be measured by growth across all targeted areas. Standards initiatives expanded, technical paper submissions increased, industry engagement accelerated, and the visibility of IEEE IAS within the data center community strengthened significantly.
Perhaps the most notable internal achievement was the elevation of the Data Center Subcommittee to a full Technical Committee within the I&CPS Department. This milestone reflects both the strategic importance of data centers and the dedication of the volunteers who contributed to the initiative to both IAS and I&CPS. As the final phase of the project continues, the newly established technical committee is well positioned to drive future innovation, collaboration, and leadership within the rapidly evolving data center industry.
