The objectives and detailed structure along with the general flyer of the event is been attached to this email. The event is coordinated by Krishna V (Vice-Chair, IEEE IAS SBC JCET) and Sreelakshmi S R (Secretary, IEEE IAS SBC JCET). ABSTRACT: Advances in Deep Learning over the past several years have demonstrated two paths to better models: scale and algorithmic innovation. Brute-force scaling of model parameter count increases model capacity, and when presented with enough training data, has shown better performance in many domains. But it requires more compute than can be delivered by a single traditional processor – clusters of 10s to even 1000s of general purpose processors are commonly used today for neural network training. This approach to scaling is not sustainable. We need algorithmic innovations to find more efficient neural network architectures and training methods. This requires more flexible hardware to develop and test novel approaches. In this presentation, we will look at the trends of recent deep learning models, discuss implications for hardware, and share how the Cerebras  CS-1 addresses these requirements for both scale and flexibility of compute.

Chapters Virtual Meeting Program

Program description:

Due to the ongoing Covid-19 restrictions, there is a great risk that the existing IAS contact and engagement with chapters will be lost. It has come to the CMD’s attention that chapters have a keen interest to organize webinars to continue chapter activities and essentially keep the chapter and/or student branch "alive" during this difficult period. With this background, CMD encourages Chapters to held virtual meetings and we are pleased to help Chapters to find IAS speakers for their events.

How does the program work?

• CMD has contacted potential speakers from the following set of IAS volunteers. There were no objections from the volunteers about receiving invitations from chapters. You may find the name, affiliation, and email address of each speaker by opening the respective link below. Some of the volunteers have already provided their presentation topic and are listed under their respective department. This list will be updated continuously as more topics are confirmed by the speakers. There are also the potential speakers and the former presenters listed.

• Having received the invitation the invitee may refuse or accept it. There is no compulsion to accept any invitation.
• If the invitee accepts the invitation, the speaker and the chapter make an agreement on topics, date and time as well as on the online platform (WebEx, Google Meet, etc) for the virtual event. The topic can be either a technical presentation or general information about the department / committee program, conferences or participation in the committee activity.
• The participation should be open for anybody and free of charge. CMD or Chapter cannot reimburse the speakers for giving a presentation. 
• The Chapter informs CMD about the event. Details about the event will be published on the CMD webpage. The Chapter may report the event also in the CMD Newsletter with participation opportunity in the Most Happening IAS Chapter Contest too.

 

 

Privacy and Copyright Instructions

 

• The events of the Virtual Chapters Meeting Program should be held in compliance with the data protection and personal privacy right regulations.
• Collecting unnecessary personal data e.g. IEEE membership number in the meeting registration form should be avoided.
• Prior to the recording of any meeting, the hosts of the meeting should advise all participants that the meeting will be recorded.
  • Recording and especially live streaming of the events might violate personal privacy.  
  • Recording the presentation is a violation of the copyright of the author.
• If presentations will be recorded as part of the meeting, written permission from the presenters shall be obtained prior to the presentation by using the Release Form.

ABSTRACT: Advances in Deep Learning over the past several years have demonstrated two paths to better models: scale and algorithmic innovation. Brute-force scaling of model parameter count increases model capacity, and when presented with enough training data, has shown better performance in many domains. But it requires more compute than can be delivered by a single traditional processor – clusters of 10s to even 1000s of general purpose processors are commonly used today for neural network training. This approach to scaling is not sustainable. We need algorithmic innovations to find more efficient neural network architectures and training methods. This requires more flexible hardware to develop and test novel approaches. In this presentation, we will look at the trends of recent deep learning models, discuss implications for hardware, and share how the Cerebras  CS-1 addresses these requirements for both scale and flexibility of compute.

Abstract:  Nuclear energy has a clear technical advantage as a source for base load carbon free electricity. However, the economic advantage for new nuclear energy plants is less clear and varies significantly from country to country. The presentation will discuss the current and near term status of nuclear energy in the U.S. and the world. This will include the trend for new nuclear plants for both large light water nuclear plants, small modular reactors and non-light water nuclear plants. In addition, the cause of the Fukushima accident will be discussed as well as the current clean-up activities. The safety enhancements for post Fukushima nuclear energy will also be discussed.

The SAE Summer Academy on Energy will be held in Budapest, Hungary, August 14-19, 2016. The main goal of the summer academy is to make a medium term energy strategy for a fictional country and to modify this plan on the go according to a major crisis that affects the whole energy production.

Social Event - IAS Presentation - Meeting with the participants of the Summer Academy on Energy

Report of Ms. Gail Hayhoe, MASc Student, University of Toronto, supported by the IAS CMD WIE Initiative to attend SAE2 The Summer Academy on Energy '16, held at Budapest University of Technology and Economics, was a wonderful experience, full of lectures, group work, and site visits all in a city steeped with culture. The summer academy entailed 11 hours of professional lectures, 15 hours group working on a case study of a fictional country's power system and 4 hours of professional site visits. Some of my favourite activities were the guest lecture by IEEE IAS's President-Elect, Tomy Sebastian, group work on the case study, and listening to each group's solutions to the case study. The organizers also arranged a bus tour of the city to see historical landmarks and other opportunities to appreciate Budapest, which the international attendees truly benefitted from and enjoyed. I am very grateful for the support to assist in attending this event. Report of Ms. Ahlem Abouda, student at the National Engineering School of Gabes (ENIG) - Tunisia, supported by the IAS CMD WIE initiative to attend SAE² The Summer Academy on Energy ’16 held at Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BUTE), was a very great opportunity to learn more, have new friends and discover the beautiful city of Budapest.During the summer academy, we attended 11 hours of professional lectures in we handled different topics like the medium-term energy strategies, the different types of renewable energy, the nuclear energy in the world (role, use, safety, cost, effects), renewable energy from the view of economists, the blackouts in the power systems, and the best lecture was presented by the IEEE IAS president—elect Mr. Tomy Sebastian about the automotive electrification. We also had 15 hours of group working on a case study of a fictional country’s power system.Moreover, we had 4 hours of professional site visits: the KFKI research campus (the Budapest Neutron Center BNC and the Nuclear Research Laboratory) and the High Voltage Laboratory in the BUTE.The organizers also took us to visit some historical sites, restaurants, we went on a bus tour around the city and we played some cultural games.Overall, this experience will allow me to achieve the high standards I’m aiming for. So I’m very grateful for the support to attend such a great event.

Peru Section, UNAC SB IAS Chapter's Technical - Social Project

 Electrical installation project in areas of extreme powerty in the town of Pachacutec-Callao. More than 180 students were involved in the renovation of the electrical installations of 28 families. Non-safety intallations (2nd row of pictures) were replaced by safety ones (3rd row). The project participants were trained so they were able to do a proper job in the field. The project was initiated and organized by the UNAC SB IAS Chapter.
