Welcome Message - 54th IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting

The IAS Annual Meeting has established a long tradition of providing a platform for practicing engineers, researchers, and technical experts to present and discuss current developments and future trends in the application of electrical technology to fields such as standards, industrial and commercial power systems, data centers, process controls, robotics and automation, electrostatics, mining, metals, smart grid and smart cities.

This conference has a full complement of tutorials, as well as technical paper and poster presentations on both new research and practical solutions developed for electrical applications. Participating departments, committees, and sub-committees will conduct their business during the conference and most are open to conference participants. In addition, IAS is a prolific IEEE Standard producer. Please join the standards working group meetings to learn from experts in the field and to share your expertise to improve the standards. Contact Daleep Mohla (d.c.mohla@ieee.org), IAS Standards Department Chair, for the opportunities to get involved.

The IAS Annual Meeting will use a mobile conference application in addition to our traditional printed media. When time is right, instructions will be posted on this website and in the printed program guide, you will receive in the welcome bag, when you physically register for the conference. I encourage you to download the mobile app to get:
    (1) the most up-to-date information about the conference,
    (2) the ability to download papers, and
    (3) the opportunity to interact with your peers via social media.
Be sure to check the schedule carefully to ensure that you don’t miss technical enrichment opportunities or favorite events.

The IAS Annual Meeting will be collocated with 2019 Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE). IAS Annual Meeting delegates are invited to attend some selected ECCE activities such as the Monday morning plenary session and the ECCE technical expo. Please check the program for detailed information.

In conjunction with ECCE, there will be a session to guide first time attendees with an overview of our Society and the week’s conference events on Sunday evening. Please attend this introductory session if you are a first time attendee.

Please join us for the Welcome luncheon (probably on Monday) for networking opportunities and learning how to get the most out of the conference. As usual, the welcome luncheon will be combined with the presentation of Myron Zucker awards to student design-contest winners. Please join us to congratulate this year’s winners.

IAS recognizes the importance of participation from both young and mature engineers for its development. This year will, once again, have an excellent roster of students from worldwide student chapters; I encourage long-time IAS attendees to meet with them and share your experiences with the engineers of tomorrow!

In addition to the technical sessions and tutorials, this week's conference will include social events, the Sunday Chapters & Membership Department (CMD) workshop and committee, subcommittee, and working group meetings. Committee and subcommittee meetings deal with the operation issues and working group meetings focus on standards development. Most of them are open to the participants. I encourage you to attend some of the meetings and get involved in the society and standards development activities.

Authors presenting papers should attend the author's breakfast on the day of their presentation. You will meet the session chairs, load your presentation, and discuss the sequence of presentations. The session chair will go over rules for the session. Guests are not permitted to attend the breakfast – only the presenter for that day’s papers.

Last but not least, don't forget to join the Award Luncheon (probably on Thursday) to celebrate and recognize recipients of this year's IAS and PELS awardees!

The organizing committee of the 54th lAS Annual Meeting has worked hard to put this conference together and hopes your stay is both pleasant and productive. Welcome to beautiful Baltimore, Maryland!

Prof. Wei-Jen LEE,
AM-19 General Chair
